Recognition of Elementary Youth Each year, an elementary student is selected for recognition in the areas of Art, Courage, Fellowship, Science, Community Service and Humanities. Each student a certificate of recognition, a club medallion anda gift certificate from Given's Books. | |

Excellence in Theater Arts Program Each year we recognize the abilities of our most gifted high school students in Theatre Arts. Students in each of the Lynchburg area public and private high schools with the highest degree of talent in theatre arts are nominated by the theatre arts director/teacher. These young people often excel not only in the performance area, but also in direction, production management, set construction, lighting, sound and other technical areas. They receive special recognition, awards and a gift certificate from Given's Books. | |

Designed to recognize middle school students for their talent and contributions in music, either playing a musical instrument, singing or both. Each student is invited to a recognition luncheon and receives a certificate of recognition, club medallion and a gift certificate from Given's Books. | |

"Why My Family is Special" Essay Program In conjunction with the Family Alliance, we honor the winners of the annual "Why My Family is Special" essay contest. Thousands of 4th from across the Lynchburg area write an essay about their families. These essays are judge by a panel of judges chosen by the Family Alliance. The winner is announced at the Alliance’s Thanksgiving event. The overall winners come to the Lynchburg Optimist December meeting, read their essays and receive their awards. | |

Recognition of Students in Students in 12th grade are recognized for their positive achievements while enrolled in one of the ten Career-Technical Education Programs in the Lynchburg City Schools. Each student is invited to a recognition luncheon and receives a certificate of recognition, a club medallion and a gift certificate from Given's Books. | |

Central Virginia Governor's School This program is designed to showcase the research abilities of talented local students attending Governor's School. Optimist Club members judge research project displays for the best visual communication. Two winners are presented with an award, a gift certificate from Given's Books and club medallion. |

Geared for middle and high school students, this program encourages students to participate in a public speaking contest on a selected topic. The contest is part of the Optimist Club International's program. Two winners are selected to continue in the competition on a regional and possibly state level. Actress Julia Roberts won an Optimist Club oratorical contest during her high school years. The Lynchburg Club has had several state winners receiving the $1500 scholarship. Respect for Law Each June, we honor the men and women whose dedication to putting their lives in harm’s way in order for ours to be safe is a noble and an ultimate act of citizenship. We present an outstanding law enforcement officer with an special award for their commitment to our community and the hard work they do in serving and protecting the citizens of Lynchburg. | |
